不轻易相信，也不轻易喜欢。成熟的头脑最为明显的标志便是不轻信他人。谎言司空见惯，所以不要经常相信别人。容易被牵着鼻子走的人很快就会被人鄙视。同时，也不必表现出你怀疑别人的真诚——这显得无礼，还是一种侮辱，因为这种怀疑等于你把递信之人视为骗子，或视其为上当受骗者。坏处不仅仅是这些，多疑还是惯于说谎之人的标志。撒谎者一般都要忍受两种煎熬：既不信人，也不为人所信。倾听者迟作判断是谨慎的，可以让讲话的人说出信息的最初来源。轻易就喜欢，也是一种类似的草率行为——言语可以行骗，行动亦能说谎，而对现实生活，后者的危害更甚于前者。

Do not believe, or like, lightly. Maturity of mind is best shown in slow belief. Lying is the usual thing; then let belief be unusual. He that is lightly led away, soon falls into contempt. At the same time there is no necessity to betray your doubts in the good faith of others, for this adds insult to discourtesy, since you make out your informant to be either deceiver or deceived. Nor is this the only evil: want of belief is the mark of the liar, who suffers from two failings: he neither believes nor is believed. Suspension of judgment is prudent in a hearer: the speaker can appeal to his original source of information. There is a simr kind of imprudence in liking too easily, for lies may be told by deeds as well as in words, and this deceit is more dangerous for practical life.
